Lothians 5th Monitor Farm Meeting
The next Lothians Monitor Farm Meeting on Thursday 9 November, will meet at Saughland Farm at 9.30am before travelling to Culpahills Farm in Fife to visit Stephen Mitchell.
Stephen farms around 140ha near St Andrews focusing on cereals. He has done extensive work on the benefits of cover crops within his rotation over a number of years, looking to put a value on the benefit they bring. Culpahills has also diversified into livery and holiday accommodation including cabins and B&B. During the visit to his farm, Stephen will give the group an insight into his business in particular the value he sees in cover crops and what led to his diversification projects
The group will also be joined by David Aglen, Farms manager at Balbirnie Home Farms, a 1,200ha mixed farming enterprise near Cupar, Fife. Balbirnie has a mix of cereals, veg and 250 breeding cows. David, a past chairman of the recent Fife Monitor Farm and a member of the benchmarking group, will talk about his farming methods in particular the benefits he sees from having a mix of enterprises
