Export Opportunities for Scotch Meat

The Scottish red meat industry enjoys a well deserved reputation for producing excellent tasting Scotch beef, Scotch lamb and Specially Selected pork.

The geographic origin and traditional methods of production have brought further recognition to the specific qualities of Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb. Both have been approved, and are protected under EC Regulation 2081/92 for Products of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

Trading restrictions were lifted in May last year and by October 2006 some £3 million pound worth of beef had left Scotland on route for the continent.

QMS has agents based in France, Italy and the Benelux countries dedicated to helping Scottish exporting companies build sales volumes for Scotch beef products.

There are signs that the export market for Scotch lamb is benefiting from the resumption of Scotch beef sales to the continent.

Scotland's livestock are raised on fine pasture in a unique environment. In addition, our industry has generations of experience in raising livestock for the food chain. These two factors are without doubt the reason why beef, lamb and pork from Scotland are highly desired by consumers.

The Scottish red meat industry is supported by a fully integrated assurance programme, which guarantees high production standards throughout the entire chain of production and processing, from the farm gate to the dinner plate.
