High protein diets help weight management

With nearly half of women and men overweight or obese, the search is on for diets that could support weight management. Research shows that high protein, low fat foods could be part of the solution. While low fat diets mean fewer calories, protein seems to help appetite control by prolonging fullness after meals.

Meat is a high protein food that is also low in calories thanks to its natural water content. As the figure shows, red meat provides almost half of a woman’s daily protein recommendation, but less than 10% of the energy recommendation. Compared with alternatives, such as fish and beans, meat is higher in protein but contains a similar level of calories. This makes meat a useful option in weight management diets, especially when grilled or oven cooked without extra fat.
