Profitability

Maximising margin and increasing profitability from better management on farm. This should include understanding the supply chain and how to utilise it more effectively including marketing stock to ensure greater profitability.

Marketing

To fully capitalise on the quality stock that Scottish farming businesses can produce, it is vital that your stock is being sold at the right time, in the right place, to the right buyers. Whether that is to a processor, through the live ring, or privately, there are a diversity of options that need careful consideration.

Timing is everything and it is critical that your stock are sold when they will provide the best return i.e. when they are the exact specification that your optimal buyer is looking for. To understand this process, it’s helpful to work backwards from the point at which you produce to the specification that your buyer or most buyers will look for then ask yourself if you are able to produce that specification, and if it is possible to do so without investing too much money. Another question that is worth asking is ‘what can my system produce that allows me to make the largest margin?’

While the idea of marketing may seem unnecessary for a commercial livestock production yet developing a marketing plan is simply the process of mapping your production process in reverse.

A breeding and marketing plan

Outlining a breeding and marketing plan requires you to take a step back and critically assess your business, to give you a chance to review the suitability of your system, actively consider different market outlets, and how these tie in with your current business structure.

If the product you want to produce is something that may be challenging for your farm business, use this exercise as an opportunity for your businesses to evaluate and compare different options available given the opportunities and limitations of your farm business.

Look for useful tools that can help you understand market demands, for example QMS’ virtual ‘Meat the Grade’ tool can help you understand the grading process and what processors and retailers look for in the livestock they purchase.

Marketing Plan

Take time to consider how you might develop a marketing plan for your business by asking yourself the following questions:

- What product or products do I want to sell?

- Is there a market for that product?

- Where is the best place to sell my product to access that market?

- Can I consistently produce that product to the right specifications?

- What adjustments need to be made to my own business to ensure I can produce that product?
