Scots are being offered an opportunity this Valentine’s weekend to find out whether pork truly has aphrodisiac qualities as suggested earlier this month by Argentina's President Cristina Fernández.

Ms Fernández has been widely reported by the press around the world as suggesting she had personal experience of the lovelife-improving effect of eating pork, reportedly saying eating grilled pork was better than Viagra!

A new chapter in the history of the Scotch Pie was written today (Wednesday, February 10th) as a healthier version of the famous pie relished by football fans throughout the country, was unveiled at Hampden Park.

Scottish football journalist and food critic, Tam Cowan, launched the pie which retains the flavour and character of the traditional mutton-based Scotch Pie but is 20% lower in saturated fat and salt than industry average.

Quality Meat Scotland is continuing its support of the Champions in Schools programme aimed at inspiring, educating and motivating school-age children.

Healthy eating is a key component of the initiative which involves 24 Scottish role models from the world of sport including Scottish rugby internationalist, Chris Paterson, double Olympic sailing gold medallist, Shirley Robertson, and former Celtic FC and Scotland football star, John Collins.

Tennis fans in Melbourne, Australia will tomorrow (Saturday 30th January) be offered a taste of Scotland when haggis is served to supporters gathered at Melbourne Park.

Quality Meat Scotland has linked up with “Scots of Victoria” to serve the special haggis as a show of support ahead of Andy Murray’s grand slam clash with Roger Federer. If the Scot is successful he will become the first Briton in 74 years to win a grand slam.

Farmers in Moray and Nairn are being given the opportunity to improve their farm’s performance by becoming the latest Monitor Farm.

A new livestock monitor farm in the area is being sought by Quality Meat Scotland, NFU Scotland and the Scottish Government. Interested farmers have an opportunity to hear more about what is involved and the benefits of having a Monitor Farm in the area at an open meeting at the Golf View Hotel in Nairn starting at 7.30pm on Thursday 11th February.

A double first in the history of Scotland’s monitor farm programme takes place this week with the appointment of a monitor farm for the Caithness and Sutherland area.

The Caithness and Sutherland monitor farm is the first for the area and also the first in Scotland to be backed by sponsorship from local businesses, in addition to funding from Quality Meat Scotland and the Scottish Government.

The long-term impact of the economic downturn on the red meat industry was one of the key topics at a marketing conference held by Quality Meat Scotland in Perthshire today (January 19th 2010).

Among those attending the event were leading retailers, processors and key opinion formers from the farming community.

Donald Biggar, Chairman of Quality Meat Scotland, said the organisation conducts research every year to identify the key drivers in consumers’ purchase decisions.
